| Proud and stubborn, Van Leeuwen, has been a fruit
farmer for most of his working life, but with debts
steadily mounting, the future of his orchard is looking
uncertain. His grown up son, Nico, manages the business
to the best of his ability and is doing what he can
to make ends meet. But there's a more pressing problem
that neither father nor son are prepared to admit:
by gradual degrees, Van Leeuwen is losing his memory.
At first, Nico tries to cope without telling anyone,
but after his father suffers a serious fall, he has
no choice but to take him to hospital. Nico and his
estranged older brother Ernst, a successful lawyer,
receive the news they had both feared the most: their
father has Alzheimer's Disease - and it's accelerating.
While Nico continues to believe he can look after
him at home, Ernst insists he needs round the clock
care and arranges for him to stay in a nursing home.
The disagreement is inevitable, but the diagnosis
reopens deeper scars. |
